Interview Summary
Videotape testimony of Zdzisław S., a non-Jew, who was born in Włocławek, Poland in 1914. He describes childhood friendships with Jews; defending Jews against attacks as part of Hashomer; meeting Mordecai Anielewicz; membership in the Polish Socialist Party; mobilization in the Polish military; German invasion; capture; escape from a prisoner-of-war camp to Włocławek; helping Jews escape to the Soviet Union; escape to Warsaw to avoid arrest for helping Jews; his brother's execution for hiding Jews; ghettoization; observing terrible conditions during ghetto visits; smuggling Jews out; establishing a restaurant in order to build a bunker in which to hide Jews; meetings with Anielewicz; obtaining false papers for Jews; purchasing arms for the Jewish underground; destruction of the ghetto in the 1943 uprising; moving to the countryside during the Warsaw 1944 uprising; and sending packages to Jews in Skarżysko-Kamienna. Mr. S. recalls returning to Warsaw after the war; diplomatic work in Austria and London; working on a farm; traveling to Israel to be honored by Yad Vashem; and continuing cordial relations with those he saved and their families. Mr. S. discusses Jewish-Polish relations; his complex views of both Warsaw uprisings; and postwar antisemitism. He notes a book which documents his story and names many wartime colleagues.
