Ruth Marston, n'e Pickhardt, was born in 1932 in Berlin. Her mother was a teacher and her father, as a communist, was a political prisoner from 1935 until he was killed in 1941. Ruth attended the Theodor-Herzl-Schule, but came to England in April 1939 with her mother who got work as an assistant matron at Fortis Green School in Aspley House. They were also supported by the Quakers. Ruth went on to study philosophy at University College London. She worked for Save the Children fund and helped found a play scheme for sick children.
