Interview Summary
8 cassette tapes featuring an interview with Majer Bogdansky. Majer was born in Poland. He was a committed socialist and was extremelly active in the Bund, working both in its Youth and Adult sections. He is trained as a tailor and was also active in the tailoring union in Lodz. He was a soldier in the Polish army and at the outbreak of the war was taken prisoner by the Russians and was sent to a labour camp in Siberia. A year and a half later he was released and joined the British Army as part of the Polish Regiment. Majer trained in Palestine and fought on the Italian front in the battle of Monte Cassino. After the war, Majer came to England and eventually settled in the East End. He continued working as a tailor. He was extremelly active in maintaining Yiddish culture in Britain and is currently chairman of the Friends of Yiddish. He taught himself to read and write music ans sets yiddish poems to his comositions, in addition to writing lyrics himself.
