Interview Summary
Interview with FC, who migrated to England in March 1940 as a refugee from Nazism . FC was born in Czechoslovakia but arrived in England in March 1940 at the age of 19 with his brother, where they joined their parents who had migrated the previous year. Shortly after his arrival in England he was interned on the Isle of Man, and then transported to Canada by boat, where he spent two years in a camp duirng the war. Cohn describes the journey from Vilnus to Newcastle by train, plane and boat; his arrival in England and his first impressions of the country; his relationship to other refugees; his internment at Kempton Park, a camp in Manchester and in Onchan and the Isle of Man; his selection for transportation to Canada in July 1940 and the journey there by boat; his arrival in Canada and the conditions in the camp there; his return to England in October 1942; his working life and marriage; his first trip to Germany in 1955 and his thoughts on Germany and German culture.
