Interview Summary
Videotape testimony of Endre M., who was born in Biharkeresztes, Hungary in 1900 to a large family with a long Hungarian history. He recalls moving to Oradea, then Budapest; his father's leased estate in Sajószöged; serving in World War I; a revolt in Košice; returning home; retired officers occupying their property; his father's death; supporting his mother and younger sister; his mother's death in 1930; attending art school; draft into a Hungarian slave labor battalion in 1939; advancing behind German troops to Berdychiv; learning the town's Jews had been \wiped out\ prior to their arrival; a month's march to Kiev through blizzards; pervasive starvation; kindness from the locals; finding icons and art for officers and trading them for food; dozens of jobs over eighteen months; returning home because he was over forty-two; German invasion in March 1944; traveling to his wife's parents in Eger; ghettoization; transfer with other military-aged men and veterans to Jelšava (the others were deported to Auschwitz, including his wife), then to Hungary; escaping with four others; traveling to Eger; learning no Jews were left; hiding in forests near Miskolc for two months; assistance from a forester from Kács; moving to Kács; liberation by Soviet partisans; staying with friends in Magyarkeresztúr; returning to Eger; trying to retrieve family property; assisting Jewish concentration camp survivors; reunion with his wife; and emigration to England.
