Videotape testimony of Edith E., who was born in Vienna, Austria in 1925, the youngest of four children. She recounts attending Jewish private school due to her siblings' antisemitic harassment in public schools; her developmentally disabled sister; German occupation in March 1938; expropriation of her father's business; her brother's emigration to Lausanne in May; Kristallnacht; her father's arrest and incarceration in Dachau; an uncle in England obtaining a visa for her father; his release; her other sister's emigration to the United States; traveling to England on a kindertransport; meeting her uncle in London; living in a Jewish children's home, then with a foster family in Sunderland; caring for her foster family's handicapped adult child; her brother's visit en route to the United States; returning to the children's home due to his complaints concerning her foster home situation; attending commercial school; working at the school and the children's home; her father's emigration to England in August 1939; his internment as an enemy alien on the Isle of Man in 1940; his release; his death from cancer; moving to London; working for Bloomsbury House; learning that her mother and other sister were in Poland; and emigrating to the United States in November 1944. Ms. E. discusses cultural life in Vienna; continuing sadness at not saying goodbye to her mother; and recovering family property after the war. She shows photographs, articles and documents.
