Wasyl Bojko was born on August 8th, 1923 in Vasylkiv (Cherkasy Oblast, Shpola Raion) in the Ukraine. He lived there in impoverished conditions with his parents and his adoptive sister. His parents were employed in agriculture and worked after the Stalinist collectivization on a collective farm.
